The company Zong began operations in 1991 as Paktel by Cable & Wireless. In Pakistan, it was the first cellular phone company to obtain a free license. AMPS services were provided until 2004, when GSM services were introduced.
Millicom Corporation acquired Paktel from Cable & Wireless in 2003. It was announced in January 2007 that Millicom International Cellular S.A. wanted to sell its stake in Paktel Limited to China Mobile. Paktel’s value was implied by the sale.
As of May 2007, China Mobile Pakistan replaced Paktel Limited as the company’s name. CMPak announced that China Mobile had increased its stake in May 2007. A new logo was introduced on April 1, 2008 when Paktel became Zong.
